How to Become a Store Manager
The retail profession, while demanding and detailed, is also one of the most social and adaptable professions. Individuals aiming for management in the retail sector must first acquire all the necessary information about the profession and then proceed accordingly. For some, the retail profession is a stepping stone; for others, it is their ultimate goal. Those who use it as a stepping stone generally gain experience in the business world and move on to their desired professions without continuing in this field. Therefore, the part that concerns us is how individuals who intend to pursue this as a profession will proceed. There are several paths to becoming a store manager; some are long and require patience, while others require significant knowledge and education. We will examine these paths in detail and see together what needs to be done.
Let's first talk about education
If we have graduated from a department in Business Administration, Economics, Marketing, or a similar field of Social Sciences and are stepping into the retail sector for the first time, we should follow the management trainee programs of stores and apply when an announcement is published. Generally, the first requirement to apply for such programs is to have a 4-year university degree. If we meet these conditions, after our application is deemed suitable, we will undergo training for about 4 to 6 months, covering both theoretical and practical aspects. Subsequently, we will be appointed as a store manager or assistant manager to a store belonging to the brand in a location convenient to our residence. The experience and knowledge gained thereafter will enable us to advance further in our current position and open more solid doors. Some stores also offer the opportunity for promotion to store manager even if a bachelor's degree is not held. A person who starts as a sales consultant can rise to become a department manager, assistant manager, and then manager. This depends somewhat on the decisions made by the brand. Some brands do not offer this opportunity at all and recruit managers from outside. However, in the vast majority, there is a long career path leading to store management. But regardless, having a university degree will have significant effects in this field, as in all other fields. How Much Do Store Managers Earn? Store managers can earn salaries ranging from at least 3 times the minimum wage to up to 15 times, depending on where they work.
