What is Pentest?

Pentest Stages

Pentest, which is an attack simulation aimed at unauthorized access to target systems, networks, and data, involves identifying and analyzing the presence of the defined target systems and applications, evaluating whether vulnerabilities exist, and then exploiting these vulnerabilities to gain unauthorized access to systems, data, and resources. Types of Pentest

To prevent these vulnerabilities that allow access to data and privileges by exploiting errors and flaws in IT systems, and to overcome potential attacks from malicious hackers with minimal issues, it is highly beneficial for your information, documents, data, networks, and systems to undergo pentesting before the possibility of being subjected to such attacks.

We can list the stages of pentest as follows:

  • The first step is information gathering; through this step, passive information is collected about the system to be tested without active scanning.
  • The second step is scanning and classification; in this step, if no issues are encountered in the first stage, active scanning is performed on the system.
  • The third step, gaining access, aims to reach a vulnerability in the system.
  • In the fourth step, if the system vulnerability is reached in the third stage, control of the system begins.
  • In the fifth step, covering tracks, we delete all the actions we have performed, meaning we erase any potential traces we might leave behind.

There are three different types of pentest:

  • Internal Network Penetration Test: Conducted to determine what data can be accessed from open systems or systems within the relevant institution or organization.
  • External Network Penetration Test: Performed to determine what data can be accessed from externally facing systems or systems.
  • Web Application Penetration Test: System attacks from within or from outside web applications are controlled.
